description. They are open, without prerequisites, to all students in the

292. Classics in the Study of Religion--E. Durkheim: The Elementary Forms
of the Religious Life. A close reading of Durkheim's major work
on religion and a consideration, through several specific examples, of the
Durkheim tradition in religious studies. J. Z. Smith. Autumn. (B)
293. Clean and Unclean. There has been a recent revival of interest
in cultic systems of purity and pollution. This course examines, comparatively,
a set of primary religious documents, and then considers, critically, the
use of these documents and systems in a series of theoretical works from
Mary Douglas to Julia Kristeva. J. Z. Smith. Spring. (C, D)
